December is Here!

December is here, and we have a busy week.

This Thursday we have an assessment on Plot & Characterization. You'll get your study guide on Tuesday. If you have questions, email me or see me during class.

We also will be working on a project in class where you will be characterizing a character from your independent novel. Make sure you are using your class time productively, and continue to work on your project at home. It is due by the end of class on Friday.

And as always, be sure you are reading at least 20 pages a day. More is always better, but be sure you are reading the minimum of 20 pages. Also make sure you are writing at least 3 pages in your journal each week. This homework will be consistent all year, so be sure to carve out time during your week to ensure you are reading and writing enough. The only way to better these skills, is to practice them.

this week at a glance...

Remember to keep up with your journal writing. You should be writing 3 pages a week, and your writing should contain at least 1 reading response and 1 journal entry.

You will be starting to writing on your own independent reading novels. Even though I will give you time in class to start your reading responses, you are responsible for finishing them before the week ends.

Remember to use your available resources. The front of your journal has your anchor questions, related literary elements, as well as sentence starters if you are struggling to begin your writing.

YOU HAVE A TEST ON AGAIN & AGAIN, MEMORY MOMENT, AND WORD OF THE WISER ON WEDNESDAY!

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY! It's Veterans Day. Make sure you call/write/text/talk to show your appreciation to a veteran by thanking him or her for their service to our country.

Progress Reports

Progress reports went home today, make sure they are signed and returned to your homebase teacher. If you received a letter, make sure those are also signed and returned. The iReady reports are for you to keep. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me about the ELA scores or your math teacher about the math iReady scores.

If you would like to a have a copy of your report, just let your homebase teacher know, and they can send another one home. Your parent can also access Parent Portal (call the office for more info) or you can access your grade on the student PowerSchool portal. Grades are also located in the grade tracker. So many places to check! But if you are ever curious, we are just an email away.

As for class, make sure you are continuing to read for at least 20 pages a day in order to gain experience and grow as a reader. This is the best, easiest, and most enjoyable way to become a better reader. Reading takes practice, and just like any other skill, the more you practice the better you become.

Keep in mind our discussion about journals this week, and will begin our discussion about reading responses next week. Soon you will be expected to complete these weekly, so be sure to get all your questions about this process answered, and be sure you are clear on the expectations. I cannot wait to begin reading your writing. I'm sure it will be great.

Reading & Genres

Our first test is almost among us! It will be this Friday (9/23), and will be on everything we've covered so far. The study guide will go home Tuesday (9/20). Please take home your toolbox and use it to complete the study guide. If you have any questions about the test, make sure you make a note of them, and I will answer your questions on Thursday. If you need the notes on genres, you can view the document below, or swing by during homebase. Don't sweat; you've got this!

Also, a few more reminders...

Keep reading an average of 20 pages a day! It's your homework. If you skip it, it's just as bad as skipping your math homework. You need that practice to get better, no matter how well you read.

Progress Reports go home on Wednesday, 9/28. You will see one paper with the grades from all subjects. If you want to see individual grades, please look at the grade tracker, or on powerschool. Students will only have 2 grades entered for my ELA class. Please be sure to keep an eye out on powerschool for grade updates throughout the rest of the quarter.

Picture day is Friday, 9/30. Bring your money in your envelope, and hand it to the photographer.

First Week Down!

What a great first week! A lot of information has been sent home about our Language Arts class, so if you have any questions about any of that information just email.

So far this week we have gone over rules and procedures, set-up our toolboxes (reading and writing), and started our decoration for our journals (due Tuesday). If you were not here one day during class, please come see me during homebase one day and we will catch you up on your table of contents. Remember, you need 2 composition notebooks for Language Arts class this year. Be sure to have the second one ready on Tuesday.

Next week will be focusing on reading and why it is so important for us to become voracious readers. If you need any information on the first week, I will post the slides we went over in class, so you can reference them outside of school.

Have a wonderfully long weekend, and don't forget to get in some reading.

Weclome 2016-2017

It is hard to believe that I am entering into my 11th year teaching. I was hyper aware of how long I've been teaching when past students came to orientation with their younger brothers and sisters and announced their ages. I feel honored to have been apart of this community since ALMS opened its doors a decade ago. It's been enlightening to be a part of the innovative, open-minded, professional staff who has challenged me and molded me into the educator I have become. I know my ALMS family will continue to inspire and push me to be the best educator I can be.

Some of you had the opportunity to sign-up to volunteer at ALMS and for the 7th grade. If you are interested in volunteering for the 7th grade (field trips, field day, poetry coffee house, lip sync battle, running copies, after school activities, donating supplies, etc.) please go to the lip below, and fill out the 7th grade volunteer google form, and we will contact you about helping us with upcoming events. We believe in building a strong community, and we know that we can do wonderful thing when our parents get involved.

Below you will see the letter I will be sending home the first day, as well as some other information about the me and Ms. Eldridge (my student teacher), my classroom and teaching philosophy, our Purple Parrot team, and the 7th grade.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me. See ya soon!

a B I G thank you and end of the year message...

Dear parents/students,

Thank you so much for making our last few events special. The Brew Lodge poetry reading and the Lip Sync Battle was amazing, and we could not have pulled any of that off with out your support and involvement, so again, thank you for all the time and effort you've put in to making those events a success. I can't wait to see what we can accomplish next year.

Students,
1 - Your infographics are due Friday, 5/13/2016. If you do not get yours in on time, please come see me, so we can develop a plan to make that happen.
